Laser welding with a CO2 laser (CVD Zinc Selenide® – ZnSe)

Laser welding with a CO2 laser is a method of welding metals. CO2 lasers are known for their high power and efficiency.

Principle:

  • The laser beam is focussed on a small point on the workpiece via an optical system.
  • The high concentration of energy melts the workpiece.
  • The weld seam is precise and leaves no residue.

Prerequisites

  • CO2 lasers use carbon dioxide as the laser medium.
  • In addition, nitrogen is required as an energy carrier and helium as a cooling gas.
  • The laser radiation with 10.6 µm (infrared light) is invisible to the eye, but very high in energy.

Advantages High welding speed, precise control of welding parameters, low thermal deformation, weld seams are resistant to mechanical stresses and durable.

Disadvantages High acquisition costs for laser systems, need for special protective measures due to the high radiation intensity.
